AGE: 32

WHEN THE BUSINESS STARTED: April 2012

WHAT YOU DO: I offer personal training and motivation, strength and conditioning, boot camps, youth sports and a group class with individualized attention.

EXPERIENCE: I have always enjoyed sports and helping others. After graduating from the University of Massachusetts Amherst with a major in sports management, I started working with others at various gyms and also had a home studio in the basement where I trained family and friends. I have multiple certifications and five years of experience in the industry.

THE MARKET: People who want to stay fit and healthy who live in Easthampton, Southampton, Northampton, Holyoke, Westhampton and Hadley

HOW YOU REACH OUT TO IT: Word of mouth, the Internet, in-person event networking, newspaper ads, client referrals, fliers, Facebook and other social media

WHAT FINANCING HURDLES HAVE YOU FACED AND HOW HAVE YOU HANDLED THEM? Spending more money than I actually budgeted and projected. This taught me to factor a buffer into my profit and loss and have a reserve for other challenging situations and circumstances.

KEY TO SUCCESS: I believe that people can get so much more out of working out in a group and in a setting with good support from not only a trainer but other members as well. That is why I focus on developing a unique community with support and encouragement that combines group class settings with affordability. I also am inspirational. I work hard to develop personal relationships, and I focus on continued education and personal development.

CHALLENGES: Balancing family and work and a lack of time in the day

MISSTEP YOU LEARNED FROM: I have always been very ambitious, but patience was not one of my strong suits. I have had great corporate jobs in the past, but I left them because I did not move quickly enough up the corporate ladder. Years later, I realized if I had just stayed a little while longer, I would have ended up where I wanted to be. I remember this lesson every day when things don’t happen exactly the way you plan them. Be patient. Business, and success in general, takes time. Don’t start something if you are not willing to see it through and give it a real shot.

WHAT OTHERS COULD LEARN FROM YOU: Don’t compare yourself to others or other businesses and how good or bad they may be doing. Everyone has their own strengths, weaknesses and personal styles. Be yourself, and focus on your goals. In the end, it’s a competition within you to be the best you can be.

WHO HELPED MENTOR YOU PROFESSIONALLY? I didn’t have a specific mentor; just experience in life and business. But whenever I’m left with a question in my mind or a decision to make, I always ask myself, “What would my father do?” Learning from mistakes has been my biggest “mentor.”

TOP GOALS FOR 2013: To triple my current membership base and influence several members/clients in a positive way

ADVICE FOR OTHERS SEEKING BUSINESS SUCCESS: Business is not easy, or everyone would be a business owner. Success means time, determination, hard work and sacrifice. Make sure you are ready, both mentally and financially, and always have a backup plan for tough times.

PARTING THOUGHT: Believe in yourself, have faith and things will turn out just fine. If they don’t, try another approach to the situation.
